DIY Sensory Bins

Sensory bins can be easy to make on your own. They can be a helpful tool for your child or student to calm down, reduce anxiety, help focus using fidgets, etc. There is no set of items you have to have, depends on your child's needs. Here are a few things I have found in researching sensory items for my son that he really enjoys.

1. Chewable jewellery:. For kids who chew their sleeves or shirt collars, pencils, or sucks fingers, etc.
Also great for focus. These are silicone free, non-toxic, and safe to chew!

They have many cute options for both boys and girls. No one would ever know that this cool jewellery is chewable.

Another great website for chewable jewellery is Chewbeads http://store.chewbeads.com/default.asp
They have junior chewbeads that are also super cute. I like the dog tags for boys.

2. Squishables and textured items are great for kids who crave touch to ease their sensory needs, for calming down and reducing anxiety. You can find many good ones at the dollar store.

3. Tangles are a great fidget or anxiety reducer. Also pretty fun to play with. They have Tangle Jr also for small hands.

4. Aaron's Putty is pretty cool. It doesn't stick or dry out. My son's favourite calm down item.

5. Weighted items will not fit in a bin, but handy to have for reducing anxiety and helping kids calm down. We have a weighted lizard from "fdmt". My son sleeps with his every night. http://www.fdmt.ca/catalogue/weightedclothesitemsweightedanimals-c-9_25.html?zenid=3fe1e4a9ce97a66130464a18dc2c2b3e

We are also ordering a weighted blanket from a small business in town who makes them to order.

6. Pencil fidgets (nuts and bolts) are great to help kids focus while their fingers are busy. My son gets distracted easily with his thoughts, so I'm hoping that these nuts and bolts help him focus more at school and when completing homework.

I picked up a couple clear bins with lids at the dollar store to place the items in. Having your child help you put the bins together is powerful because they have a sense of control and feel apart of the decision. Then they will be more likely to use the items also. We made two, one for home and one for school. Be sure to label the items that you are sending to school.
Stuffies could also be could if kids like hugs, or soft comfort items. I'm hoping to keep adding new items as I discover them.
I'd love to hear any suggestions!
